Why Mandela Keita snubbed Guinea despite approach over international switch
Parma midfielder Mandela Keita has revealed that representing Guinea was never an option despite being approached by the West African nation during his prolonged absence from the Belgium squad.
The 24-year-old has returned to the Red Devils setup following the appointment of Mark van Bommel, who previously worked with Keita at Royal Antwerp.
Keita, who holds dual nationality, confirmed that Guinea made contact while he was outside Belgium’s plans. However, the midfielder insists he remained fully committed to his international future with the European side.
“I have dual nationality and they contacted me. But my focus was always on the Red Devils. It never crossed my mind to switch.”
His return marks a significant change in fortunes for a player who had been out of Belgium’s plans for an extended period.
Keita first received a Belgium call-up in 2023 after playing an important role in Antwerp’s successful domestic campaign. The midfielder helped the club win the Belgian Pro League title and the Belgian Cup, performances that earned him recognition at international level.
Despite making his debut, Keita subsequently dropped out of contention and had to wait for another opportunity with the national team.
His club career has continued to develop during that period. Keita moved to Parma in 2024 and has established himself as an important member of the Italian side, making 77 appearances since his arrival.
The midfielder has contributed one goal and two assists during his time with the club, while his consistent involvement has helped him work his way back into Belgium’s plans.
The reunion with Van Bommel has also played a role in Keita’s international comeback. The coach already knows the midfielder from their time together at Antwerp, where they worked during Keita’s breakthrough at the club.
Now back in the Belgium setup, Keita has the opportunity to add to his international experience and compete for a more established role under his former coach.
His immediate target will be Friday evening’s meeting with Turkey, where he could make his second appearance for the Red Devils.
With Van Bommel now in charge and Keita back in the squad, the Parma midfielder will hope his latest opportunity marks the beginning of a sustained run with Belgium rather than another brief spell on the international fringes.
