Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez is threading cautiously with few games to end the 2026 World Cup qualification.
Mahrez, who currently plies his trade for Saudi Arabia side Al Ahli was in action on Tuesday night when Algeria thumped Mozambique in the World Cup qualifiers.
The former African champions cruised to an emphatic 5-1 win over Mozambique in the sixth round of the qualifying campaign at the Stade Hocine Aït Ahmed, solidifing their chances of securing a spot for the mundial.
Algeria has moved three points clear at the top of the standings in Group G, with four matches to end the qualifiers.
“We started the match well, created several scoring opportunities, controlled the ball well, and put a lot of pressure on our opponents. However, we cannot say that we played a perfect match, it was just good.”
“We are very happy with this victory, but we have not yet secured qualification. We still have four matches to go, and we must focus on winning them to secure a place in the World Cup.”
“The Mozambique national team achieved positive results and remained close to us in the standings. Now we have to maintain the points difference. We know that matches in Africa are not easy, but we have to prove ourselves.”
Algeria sit top with (15) points, followed by Mozambique (12), then Botswana and Uganda (9), Guinea (7), and finally Somalia with one point.
