We’re paying Assane Diaw’s salary so we decided to play him against AS Roma – Como boss Cesc Fabregas takes swipe at Senegal coach Pape Thiaw

AS Roma manager Cesc Fabregas has criticized Senegal coach Pape Thiaw for including winger Assane Diaw in the nation’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad.

Diaw, who was expected to feature for Senegal at the tournament, suffered a thigh injury after a short burst towards goal and had to leave the field just 37 minutes into the game. The injury now puts his participation in the AFCON in doubt.

Speaking to Football Italia after the match, Fabregas expressed frustration over the decision.

“Diao injured his thigh muscle during that strong run towards the goal. It is difficult to be honest in these statements after the match, because we are under attack in any case, but I will try.”

“I am a big fan of national teams, and I am really happy that my players have been called up for international participation, as this is a great achievement for any player.”

However, Fabregas questioned the logic behind Diaw’s selection.

“All I asked for was some logic, and not to call him up for the tournament, as he is a player who has barely participated in matches for eight months due to recurring injuries and inconsistent performance.”

The Como boss also explained why he allowed Diaw to play against Roma despite his limited fitness.

“He probably wasn’t supposed to play against Roma either, but I chose him because he’s leaving the next morning and won’t be with me for five weeks, so we’re paying his salary, so let’s at least let him play with us for a little while.”

On his conversation with Senegal’s coach, Fabregas described it as “unpleasant and uncomfortable.”

“The coach said that if Diao doesn’t join us, he won’t participate in the World Cup. This is unfair, and he’s exploiting the player’s fears. He’s only 20 years old and has a long football career ahead of him. I don’t agree with this; it wasn’t a fair or correct approach.”
