‘Wearing Man United shirt can intimidate players’ – English-Angolan Angel Gomes

Angel Gomes

Olympique Marseille’s newest acquisition Angel Gomes has opened up about the unique psychological demands of representing Manchester United, suggesting some players struggle with the immense expectations that come with the famous red jersey.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who spent a decade in United’s academy before departing for Lille in 2020, provided rare insight into the pressures faced by young talents at Old Trafford.

Gomes, of Angolan descent, told BBC Sport: “I think some [players] may have been intimidated or not really know about the weight, what it carries and what it takes.”

The England U21 international emphasized how United’s storied history becomes ingrained in players from their earliest days at the club.

“From the moment you step into the place, the coaches are telling you about the history,” Gomes revealed. “The Busby Babes, they show you pictures of George Best and Bobby Charlton.”

The playmaker’s comments shed light on why several promising talents have faltered at United only to flourish elsewhere.

“Sometimes it’s down to environment, timing and having the right things in place to help you,” Gomes explained, adding that a player’s struggles at United don’t necessarily reflect their true ability.

Gomes’ perspective carries particular weight given his unique career trajectory – rising through United’s famed academy before establishing himself in Ligue 1.
