Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is not getting carried away as the battle for the South African Premier League title continues.
The Brazilians are closing in on the Premier League following their 3-0 victory over Chippa United on Wednesday. The win saw Sundowns set a new record, becoming the highest-scoring team in a single South African Premier League season with 57 goals.
However, Cardoso is urging his players to approach the remaining matches with a cool head as they seeks to snatch the title.
Cardoso insists the side will only celebrate when the championship is mathematically secured.
“But we need to focus on the next match, just like the previous ones, fight for the win and secure three points, because we know our rival won’t be playing this weekend as they’ll be contesting the Cup final.
Then we’ll have to play again on Wednesday, and we’ll do everything possible to collect as many points as we can, until it’s mathematically done—then we’ll think about celebrating. Until then, I won’t let anyone celebrate. We only celebrated today’s victory, nothing more, and now we’re moving on to the next one,” Cardoso stated.
Mamelodi Sundowns are on top of the league standings, accumulating 64 points whiles Orlando Pirates sit second spot with 52 points. It is important to note that the Soweto giants are two matches behind Sundowns and could close the gap if they are able to secure wins in the games.
