Swiss tactician Marcel Koller guided his side to a 0-0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final on Saturday afternoon, keeping their title hopes very much alive.
Rather than chase possession stats, Koller focused on control in key areas of the pitch. His team frustrated the South African giants from start to finish, denying them rhythm and space.
“We prevented the opponent from controlling the game … there is still one more half in Cairo,” Koller said after the game.
“There is still another half in Cairo, and we have to be very focused in the return game and not concede goals to qualify for the final.
The Red side carved out better chances in both halves and nearly snatched a lead when a shot rattled the crossbar. Koller praised his side’s structure and focus, crediting their discipline and preparation.
“It’s not important to have possession and not capitalise on it, we were more dangerous and one of our chances was blocked by the crossbar. We were very organised,” he explained.
“We gained experience and were able to study the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. The players gave it their all today,”
With the return leg set for Cairo, Koller is urging total concentration as they chase a spot in the final.
