‘We play for the coach’ – Swedish-Cameroonian Anthony Elanga backs Howe amid Newcastle resurgence
Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga has voiced strong support for manager Eddie Howe, insisting the squad remains fully behind him as they look to regain form.
The Magpies have recently emerged from a period of disappointing results that had sparked questions over Howe’s position, but Elanga emphasized the players’ confidence in their coach ahead of tonight’s Champions League playoff first-leg at Qarabag.
Speaking to the media, the Swede of Cameroonian descent praised Howe for his guidance and the trust he has instilled across the squad. “We play for the coach. He has given us so much confidence and he’s helped every single one of us so much,” he said.
The winger acknowledged that Newcastle’s performances have not always been consistent but stressed that the team is focused on building momentum from their recent victories, particularly in away fixtures.
“We know we haven’t been perfect. There have been times when we’ve played really well and it is just consistency,” he added.
Elanga highlighted the importance of letting their football speak for itself, noting that the players are determined to repay Howe’s faith through strong performances on the pitch.
“It’s up to us to just keep letting our football do the talking,” he said, signaling the squad’s collective commitment to their manager’s vision.
Looking ahead to the clash in Azerbaijan, Elanga warned that Qarabag will be a challenging opponent but insisted that Newcastle’s ambitions remain high.
“Qarabag are not going to be easy. But we are very ambitious and we want to go as far as we possibly can,” he said. He also expressed hope that the team can deliver an entertaining display for the fans who have traveled to support them. “Hopefully we can put on a performance for the fans that have come here,” Elanga added.
