We might spoil Mamelodi Sundowns’ party – Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele has issued a bold warning ahead of a crucial Betway Premiership clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, stressing his outfit are desperate to disrupt their opponents’ title ambitions.
The Amakhosi travel to the iconic Loftus Versfeld Stadium for a high-stakes showdown against the reigning champions, who currently sit atop the standings and are closing in on domestic glory once again.
A victory for Sundowns would push them to 67 points—five clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates—significantly strengthening their grip on the title race. But Cele has made it clear Chiefs have no intention of making it easy.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, the midfielder acknowledged Sundowns’ dominance in recent years but stressed that Chiefs are equally motivated to compete and improve.
“Of course, if you look at the recent history, they have been a team that’s been dominating the league in terms of winning trophies and especially the league,” Cele said.
He pointed out that increased competition—particularly from Orlando Pirates and a resurgent Chiefs side—has added fresh intrigue to the title race, making this season one of the most competitive in recent memory.
“So, they’re going to want to come out with guns blazing because now they have someone who’s competing with them, which is our rival Orlando Pirates and us also, considering our recent history becoming closer and closer, step by step,” he added.
While Cele admitted Sundowns are favorites to clinch the title again, he emphasized that Chiefs are focused on their own progress—and could yet play the role of spoilers.
“But we might as well maybe spoil the party for them, you know what I mean, trying to pick up ourselves, because we’re also in our journey. So it’s games you want to win.”
With pride, points, and the title race all on the line, the clash in Pretoria promises to be a defining moment—not just for Sundowns’ championship ambitions, but for Chiefs’ continued resurgence.
