We are not afraid of Nigeria – Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma ahead of World Cup playoff
Head coach of Gabon Thierry Mouyouma says his outfit are not afraid of Nigeria ahead of the crucial 2026 World Cup playoff.
The Panthers missed out on automatic World Cup qualification, and are set to participate in a playoff to determine their fate for the tournament to be staged in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
The playoff structure sees Gabon face Nigeria on Thursday, November 13 at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat, while Cameroon takes on DR Congo. The winners will compete on November 16 for a spot in the intercontinental playoffs.
Despite admitting Nigeria favourite tag, Mouyouma insists his outfit are not afraid of the Super Eagles as they seeks to secure a place in the playoff final on Sunday.
“We know that Nigeria, a great African team, are the favourites — and our underdog status suits us just fine,” Mouyouma said.
“Nigeria will be under more pressure, which is understandable. But while we respect them for everything they represent, we’re not afraid. We know the quality of their squad and the dangers posed by players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. And I think Nigeria knows us very well too.” He said.
The Panthers of Gabon will be counting on former Dortmund, Chelsea, and Barcelona star Pierre Emerick Aubameyang in their quest to beat Nigeria in the high-stake clash.
