Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has insisted that his squad remains fully committed to preparations for the upcoming World Cup, despite the lingering controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year.

Speaking after a 2-1 friendly victory over Paraguay in Lens, northern France, Ouahbi stressed that his players have remained focused during their recent camp.

“We are focused on the World Cup. We have had 10 days together where I honestly haven’t felt as though anyone has been distracted,” the recently-appointed Ouahbi said of his team in Lens, in northern France, where Tuesday’s game took place.

Morocco secured the win over Paraguay through goals from Bilal El Khannouss and Neil El Aynaoui, while Gustavo Caballero netted the consolation for the South American side. The result followed a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in Madrid, reflecting steady progress as the Atlas Lions fine-tune their preparations.

Ouahbi, who took over from Walid Regragui in March, emphasised the importance of maintaining a clear focus as Morocco builds towards the tournament, where they have been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Haiti and Scotland.

“Our job, as a staff and as players, is to prepare for the World Cup,” added Ouahbi, who was appointed in early March to succeed Walid Regragui.

“The federation’s job is to protect the team. We are in good hands and we are very confident.”

Morocco’s build-up has been overshadowed by events from the AFCON final, where they initially lost 1-0 to Senegal after extra time.

However, the Confederation of African Football later stripped Senegal of the title following disciplinary sanctions after players walked off in protest over a penalty decision. Morocco were subsequently declared champions, though Senegal have since appealed the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Despite the off-field developments, Ouahbi remains intent on keeping his squad grounded and focused on the global stage ahead.
