Watford bring in French-Malian defender Soumaila Coulibaly for Championship campaign

Watford have added France and Mali centre-back Soumaila Coulibaly to their squad, with the 22-year-old joining from French club Strasbourg on loan.

Coulibaly’s move to Vicarage Road was completed on 1 September 2026, with the loan scheduled to run until 30 June 2027. He becomes a Watford player after spending the opening part of the 2026-27 season with Strasbourg, who compete in Ligue 1.

The left-footed defender is listed as a centre-back and stands 1.91m tall. His arrival gives Watford another option in central defence as they compete in the Championship.

Coulibaly returned to Strasbourg at the end of June after completing a loan spell with Stade Brestois during the 2025-26 campaign. He had moved to Brest from Strasbourg in October 2025 and returned to his parent club when that temporary arrangement ended.

Before joining Strasbourg permanently, Coulibaly had been under contract at Borussia Dortmund. Strasbourg signed him from the German club on 7 July 2025 for €7.5m, following a series of loan moves that had taken him away from Dortmund.

Those previous temporary spells included a season with Royal Antwerp in 2023-24 and a further loan at Brest in 2024-25. He returned to Dortmund after each arrangement before making the permanent switch to Strasbourg.

Coulibaly began his youth career with Montfermeil before joining Paris Saint-Germain’s academy. He moved from Paris Saint-Germain Under-19s to Dortmund in July 2021, marking the next stage of a career that has included football in France, Germany and Belgium.

He was born in Montfermeil on 14 October 2003 and is eligible to represent both France and Mali. Coulibaly’s listed playing preference is his left foot, adding a left-sided profile to Watford’s defensive group.

The defender has joined at the start of a new campaign in which Watford are competing in the Championship, while Strasbourg remain in France’s top flight. His transfer follows a season in which he spent time in Ligue 1 with Brest before returning to Strasbourg.

Coulibaly’s Watford agreement is in place until the end of June 2027, when the loan is due to conclude and he is scheduled to return to Strasbourg. The completed move gives Watford the defender for the 2026-27 season.
