Zimbabwe’s Warriors returned to a jubilant reception at Robert Mugabe International Airport, their fans unshaken by a 2-1 loss to Cameroon in their final Group J AFCON Qualifiers match.
The Warriors’ achievement in securing their sixth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification sparked nationwide pride. German coach Michael Nees, whose tactical brilliance guided the team, was met with chants of praise as supporters clad in Zimbabwe’s national colors filled Robert Mugabe International Airport.
“It’s a great moment for everyone, more importantly the fans. I am proud of the boys for what they did but more importantly the fans for rallying behind us in Polokwane,” Nees said.
“So definitely it’s a special moment for everyone,” he added.
This marks Zimbabwe’s return to AFCON after missing the 2023 edition due to a FIFA suspension, which was lifted last July. Nees now joins Croatian Zdravko Logarusic as the only foreign coaches to lead the Warriors to qualification.
Zimbabwe will join eight other COSAFA teams, including South Africa and Zambia, at the 2025 tournament, reigniting hopes for regional football dominance. Fans eagerly anticipate what promises to be a thrilling campaign.
