Walid Regragui’s assistant Rachid Benmahmoud rejects role under new Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi
Rachid Benmahmoud has reportedly decided to end his involvement with the Morocco national football team technical setup, turning down opportunities to remain within the team’s new coaching structure.
The former assistant coach has reiterated his refusal to continue working with the national team under the new technical staff led by Mohamed Ouahbi. Instead, Benmahmoud is said to be seeking a new challenge outside the national team environment as he explores professional opportunities elsewhere.
Per sources, Benmahmoud’s decision to depart came following the separation between the Moroccan federation and former head coach Walid Regragui. Despite efforts by several players within the Atlas Lions squad to convince him to remain with the team, the experienced coach reportedly chose to move on.
Besides, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation attempted to retain Benmahmoud in a different capacity by offering him a role as a coordinator with the senior national team. However, the proposal was also declined, with the coach preferring to evaluate the offers he has received from clubs and projects outside the Moroccan national team setup.
Negotiations between the parties are believed to have become complicated in recent weeks, particularly following discussions about restructuring the coaching hierarchy. One proposal reportedly involved Benmahmoud continuing as first assistant while Ouahbi Sacramento would also be appointed to a similar position. The arrangement reportedly increased tensions regarding Benmahmoud’s role and future within the technical staff.
As it stands, the situation remains open, with multiple scenarios still possible. However, indications strongly suggest that Benmahmoud’s long association with the Atlas Lions could be coming to an end as he prepares to embark on a new chapter in his coaching career.
The departure would mark the end of an important period for the Moroccan national team staff, with Benmahmoud having played a significant role in the technical team during one of the most notable eras in the country’s football history.
