Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has revealed that discussions are ongoing for a possible international friendly against World Cup holders Argentina.

Speaking after the Atlas Lions’ narrow 1-0 victory over Congo in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Regragui confirmed that both sides are exploring the idea, though final confirmation remains uncertain.

“Our goal is to play a match against Argentina. It’s true that we’re in talks with them about it, but it remains complicated, and it may not happen in the end,” he said.

The Moroccan coach explained that the team is also considering matches against other African nations while keeping their schedule flexible.

“As I said before, there are also African teams we want to face. We’ve received some requests, but in the end, it doesn’t depend only on us. We’ll adapt this week to see which team is available.”

Despite the uncertainty, Regragui admitted that Argentina remains the priority opponent.

“We’ll wait for their answer in the next two or three days. If it happens, it will be a big match for us. If not, we might face an African or even an Asian team, which would give us a different style of play,” he added.

He concluded by reaffirming Morocco’s ambition to test themselves against elite opposition:

“We want to play against the biggest teams, but it doesn’t depend only on us.”

The Atlas Lions are currently fine-tuning their preparations ahead of hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in December.

Morocco are also among the African teams set to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
