Tunisian international Wajdi Kechrida is on the verge of joining Al-Gharafa in Qatar, with the full-back scheduled for a medical examination on Friday, September 20, 2024. Following the completion of this step, the 28-year-old is expected to sign a three-year contract with the Qatari side.
Kechrida, who has been a free agent since leaving Atromitos Athens, opted for the Al-Gharafa offer, reportedly worth $350,000, despite having an initial agreement with Tunisian club Etoile Sportive du Sahel. His decision marks a significant shift in his career as he ventures into the Qatari league.
The move to Al-Gharafa will be a fresh chapter for the defender, who has garnered 36 international caps for Tunisia.
After spending five years with Etoile Sportive du Sahel and later experiencing Serie A football with Salernitana, Kechrida moved to Greece, where he made 51 appearances over two seasons with Atromitos Athens.
His time in Greece allowed him to revive his form after a brief spell in Italy.
By making the switch to Al-Gharafa, Kechrida aims to secure regular playing time and reignite his prospects with the Tunisian national team.
His absence from the national squad since March 2024 has been noticeable, and he hopes this move will help him regain the attention of Tunisia’s coaching staff.
Kechrida’s decision to choose the Qatari offer highlights the increasing allure of the Middle Eastern leagues for players seeking both competitive opportunities and financial rewards.
As he begins this new phase of his career in Qatar, the full-back will be looking to make an immediate impact at Al-Gharafa and further his aspirations of returning to international duty.
