Wahbi Khazri has criticized the decision by French football authorities to schedule matches on May 5th, the anniversary of the Furiani disaster. The former Bastia player, who was with the club from 2009 to 2014 and now plays for AS Saint-Étienne, called for respect for the memory of the victims of the 1992 tragedy.
“There are people who manage to postpone matches for less serious reasons. Here, a catastrophe has occurred, I think it’s a good way to pay tribute to these people, and the League isn’t doing what it takes to do so,” Khazri told Saint-Étienne’s media outlet Activ Radio, as reported by L’Équipe.
The Tunisian midfielder added, “It’s damaging for French football. Bastia is a monument of French football, and it’s important to pay tribute to these people. There are people who are still suffering from it. All it takes is postponing four or five matches to honor the memory of these people and to respect them.”
Khazri’s comments reflect his strong belief that the league should show sensitivity to the victims and their families, acknowledging the lasting impact of one of French football’s darkest days.
