WAFU Women's A: Senegal defeats Guinea and takes the lead in Group A

The Senegalese women’s national team, known as the Lionesses, began their 2020 WAFU A Women’s Tournament campaign with a 1-0 victory over Guinea on Tuesday in Sierra Leone. The win provided a strong start for head coach Mame Moussa Cissé’s side and a boost to their confidence for the remainder of the competition.

The decisive moment came in the 18th minute when Binta Diakité converted a penalty to give Senegal the lead. From that point, the Lionesses controlled the match, maintaining pressure on Guinea and demonstrating their tactical organization and composure in front of goal.

Senegal will now turn their attention to their second group-stage match against Cape Verde women’s national football team on February 27. Cape Verde opened their tournament with a goalless draw against host nation Sierra Leone women’s national football team, making the upcoming clash a crucial opportunity for Senegal to consolidate their position at the top of Group A.

Meanwhile, Group B fixtures for Wednesday will feature Mali women’s national football team versus Gambia women’s national football team and Guinea-Bissau women’s national football team against Liberia women’s national football team, rounding out the first round of group-stage action.

Senegal’s opening performance sets the tone for their campaign, signaling intent to compete strongly for the tournament title while continuing their preparation for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
