Guinea’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the UFOA Zone A Under-20 tournament ended in disappointment as the host nation was knocked out during the group stage of the regional competition. Despite entering the final round of matches with qualification still within reach, the Syli National failed to capitalize on their opportunity and saw their campaign come to an abrupt halt.

Heading into the decisive Group A fixtures on Friday, Guinea needed only a draw to secure a place in the last four. Playing in front of their home supporters and with expectations high, the young Guinean side appeared well positioned to progress. However, they were unable to hold off a determined Sierra Leone team that had everything to play for. In a tense and competitive encounter, Sierra Leone edged Guinea in a five-goal thriller, claiming a 3-2 victory that dramatically altered the group standings.

The defeat proved costly for Guinea. Instead of celebrating qualification, Bobo Baldé’s squad watched their opponents leapfrog them in the table. With the win, Sierra Leone finished top of the group with six points, sealing their place in the semi-finals and leaving the hosts frustrated. For Guinea, the result marked a bitter end to a campaign that had promised much but ultimately delivered heartbreak.

In the other Group A match, Senegal ensured their progression with a controlled performance against Mauritania. The encounter ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that was enough for the Senegalese to secure second place and advance to the knockout stage. Senegal managed the game effectively, doing just enough to protect their advantage in the standings without taking unnecessary risks. Their consistency throughout the group phase paid off, allowing them to move forward while others faltered.

Attention then shifted to Group B action on Saturday, where qualification scenarios were equally tight. Mali faced Gambia knowing that a positive result would be sufficient to continue their journey in the tournament. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, a scoreline that suited Mali’s needs. They showed resilience and composure to secure the point required, booking their ticket to the semi-finals without drama.

Gambia, meanwhile, also progressed despite the draw. As the defending champions, they remain one of the favorites to retain their title and will look to use their experience and pedigree to their advantage in the knockout rounds.

With the group stage now complete, the semi-final lineup has been confirmed. Sierra Leone will take on Mali in what promises to be a closely contested clash between two disciplined sides. In the other semi-final, holders Gambia will face Senegal, setting up an exciting encounter between the reigning champions and one of West Africa’s most consistent youth teams.

As the tournament moves into its decisive phase, four teams remain in the hunt for regional glory, while Guinea are left to reflect on what might have been after falling short on home soil.
