There was no winner in the opening match of Group B at the WAFU Zone A Under-20 Tournament, as Gambia and Mali shared the spoils in a 1–1 draw, leaving both sides with mixed feelings after a closely contested encounter.
Defending champions Gambia began their title defense with determination and looked eager to assert their dominance early in the competition. The Young Scorpions controlled much of the first half, showing composure in possession and creating several attacking opportunities. Their efforts were rewarded in the 32nd minute when Matarr Ceesay found the breakthrough. Taking advantage of a well-worked move, he calmly slotted the ball home to give Gambia the lead and put the holders in a strong position.
With the advantage secured, Gambia appeared comfortable and managed the game efficiently for long stretches. Their defense remained organized, limiting Mali’s chances and frustrating the Eagles’ attempts to get back into the match. As time passed, it seemed increasingly likely that the reigning champions would begin their campaign with a victory.
However, Mali refused to give up. The Eagles gradually pushed forward in search of an equalizer, increasing the pressure during the final minutes. Their persistence finally paid off late in the game. In the 85th minute, Saidou Kone capitalized on an opportunity to level the score, beating the Gambian defense and restoring hope for his side. The late goal stunned Gambia and shifted the momentum, ensuring that both teams would leave the pitch with a point each.
Despite a few tense moments in stoppage time, neither side managed to find a winner, and the match ended all square. For Gambia, the draw will feel like a missed opportunity after leading for most of the game. For Mali, the late comeback will be seen as a valuable result and a testament to their fighting spirit.
This encounter was the only match played in Group B on the day due to Guinea-Bissau’s last-minute withdrawal from the tournament. Although the team had previously confirmed its participation, logistical issues prevented them from traveling, reducing the group to three teams. As a result, Liberia, who had a scheduled bye, did not play and will begin their campaign on Wednesday against Gambia.
The competition continues with more action on Tuesday, this time in Group A. Hosts Guinea will face Senegal in what promises to be a highly anticipated clash, while Mauritania take on Sierra Leone in the other fixture. These matches are expected to further set the tone for the rest of the tournament as teams battle for qualification to the knockout stages.
