WAFCON 2026: Morocco edge South Africa to reach semifinals and secure World Cup spot

Morocco defeated defending champions South Africa 2-1 in a thrilling quarter-final at Stade Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, securing a place in the WAFCON 2026 semifinals and qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The hosts made a confident start and took the lead in the 31st minute. Sakina Ouzraoui finished from Hanane Ait El Haj’s assist, giving Morocco a deserved advantage before the interval. South Africa struggled to create clear chances as the Atlas Lionesses defended their lead with discipline.

Morocco extended their advantage seven minutes after half-time when Ait El Haj converted a penalty. The second goal appeared to put the hosts in control, but South Africa refused to surrender. Thembi Kgatlana pulled one back in the 67th minute, setting up a tense finish.

Banyana Banyana pushed for an equaliser, yet Morocco held firm to complete a memorable victory. The result ended South Africa’s attempt to retain the continental crown they won in 2022.

Morocco will now await their semifinal opponent while continuing their pursuit of a first WAFCON title. Their progress also confirms a return to the global stage, with the 2027 World Cup scheduled for Brazil.
