WAFCON 2026: Morocco coach Jorge Vilda anticipates tough Senegal test in final Group A match

Moroccan coach Jorge Vilda is anticipating a tough test against Senegal in their final Group A encounter at the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations tournament.

In a highly competitive clash on Monday, August 3, the Atlas Lioness will lock horns with Senegal at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, with victory crucial to securing top spot in their group.

Currently, Morocco leads Group A, accumulating six points after back-to-backs wins in their first two matches at the tournament.

Speaking ahead of the match, Vilda stated that the Senegalese team has developed significantly compared to previous years. They no longer rely solely on direct passes and speed, but are now capable of building attacks and playing as a team. He added that the match will be balanced and will require the “Atlas Lionesses” to perform at their best.

The national coach explained that the Moroccan team has also seen considerable development, benefiting from the experience accumulated in recent years. He believes the players possess the confidence and capabilities necessary to achieve a positive result and finish the group stage in the best possible way.

Meanwhile, Vilda has praised the project led by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, headed by Fouzi Lekjaa, to develop women’s football.

He emphasized that investing in youth categories, expanding the talent scouting base, and working according to a unified methodology within the national teams are factors that will positively impact the future of the game.

The Spanish coach added that results require time and consistency, but he believes that Morocco possesses all the necessary elements to become, in the near future, an African and global force in women’s football, especially with the increasing focus on youth categories and upcoming international competitions.
