WAFCON 2026: Deborah Abiodun praises Super Falcons’ resilience in crucial Zambia win

Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has praised Nigeria’s resilience and team spirit after the defending champions bounced back from their shock defeat to Malawi with a crucial 1-0 victory over Zambia at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Falcons entered the clash under pressure after suffering a historic loss to Malawi in their opening Group C fixture, but Asisat Oshoala’s early strike was enough to secure all three points and revive Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Oshoala struck after just eight minutes, giving the nine-time African champions the perfect start in a tense encounter. Nigeria were forced to defend for much of the game after receiving a red card in the first half, but they held firm to claim a vital win.

Abiodun salutes teammates’ character

Abiodun, who played a key role in Nigeria’s midfield battle, credited her teammates for showing determination and unity despite the difficult circumstances.

“I’m very excited, kudos to my teammates it was a hard fight especially getting a red card in the first half,” Abiodun told the media.

The midfielder highlighted the collective effort from the entire squad, including players who did not feature in the match.

“So I just want to say thank you to my lovely teammates, I really appreciate everyone’s effort, from the reserve to the players on the field. Everyone was intact.”

Nigeria’s victory moved them back into contention in Group C, setting up a decisive final group game as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.

Champions respond after Malawi setback

The result provided a much-needed response from a Nigerian side that had been stunned by Malawi in their opening match.

Despite being reduced to 10 players, the Super Falcons showed the experience and defensive discipline expected from the tournament’s most successful team, frustrating Zambia’s attacking threat.

Abiodun insisted the team’s focus remained on delivering results for their supporters.

“We had one goal going forward and we are happy that we got the three points and making Nigerians proud as always.”
