Patrice Motsepe arrives in Morocco for WAFCON 2026 opening

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has arrived in Rabat ahead of the official opening of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2026, as anticipation builds for Africa’s premier women’s football tournament.

The South African football administrator landed in the Moroccan capital on the eve of the competition, underscoring the Confederation of African Football’s commitment to the continued growth and development of the women’s game across the continent.

Upon his arrival, Dr Motsepe was warmly received by the General Secretary of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Tarik Najem. He was also joined by CAF Acting General Secretary Samson Adamu as preparations entered their final phase for the tournament’s opening ceremony and opening match.

Morocco is once again hosting the continental showpiece, bringing together Africa’s top women’s national teams in a competition expected to showcase the remarkable progress of women’s football on the continent. The tournament will also provide another platform for emerging stars and established players to display their talents on the biggest stage in African women’s football.

Dr Motsepe’s presence in Rabat highlights CAF’s determination to elevate the profile of the women’s game through increased investment, improved infrastructure and greater commercial opportunities. Since assuming office, the CAF President has consistently emphasized the importance of strengthening women’s football as a key pillar of African football’s long-term development strategy.

The opening of WAFCON Morocco 2026 is expected to attract football dignitaries, government officials, federation representatives and thousands of supporters, with millions more following the action across the globe.

As the continent’s finest women’s teams prepare to battle for continental glory, CAF officials, led by Dr Motsepe, will oversee what promises to be another landmark edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
