WAFCON 2026: Algeria edge Morocco on penalties to secure third place

Algeria defeated Morocco 3-2 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw in the WAFCON 2026 third-place playoff.

The result secured Algeria’s victory in a tense North African contest that remained undecided after extra time.

Morocco started with greater purpose and took the lead in the 37th minute. Kautar Azraf finished an assist from Hanane Ait El Haj, giving the hosts a narrow advantage before the break. Algeria struggled to create a clear response during the opening half, while Morocco defended their lead with confidence.

The match changed after half-time as Algeria increased the pressure. Lina Boussaha eventually restored parity in the 83rd minute, ensuring the encounter went to a penalty shootout. Morocco missed a late penalty in stoppage time, but the teams still could not be separated during regulation play.

The shootout produced further tension, with misses from both sides. Algeria ultimately prevailed 3-2, as Marine Dafeur, Sofia Bekhaled and Ines Belloumou converted crucial attempts. Morocco’s Najat Badri, Zineb Redouani, and Rania Boutiebi were among those unable to score.

Algeria’s composure from the spot secured third place, while Morocco were left to reflect on a match they had led for much of the contest.
