On Thursday, the board of Al Ahly SC, led by president Mahmoud El Khatib, announced a restructuring of the club’s football department, with Gomaa appointed as football director to replace Walid Salah El-Din.

Reacting to the announcement, Gomaa took to social media to share an emotional message with Al Ahly supporters, describing the club as his home and emphasizing the importance of unity during a challenging period.

“I am happy to return once again to my home, Al Ahly Club, at a difficult time that requires everyone to join forces to regain control, God willing, over African and local football and to aspire to global success,” he wrote.

The former defender, who enjoyed a legendary playing career with Al Ahly, believes collective effort will be key as the club seeks to reclaim major titles and strengthen its standing on the international stage.

Gomaa also used the opportunity to thank the State of Qatar, where he has spent recent years working as a football analyst.

He expressed appreciation for the hospitality he received during his stay, noting that he always felt welcomed and valued.

“I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the sisterly State of Qatar, government and people, for their hospitality and generosity, in which I never felt like a stranger. May God perpetuate security, safety and prosperity for it,” he said.

The former Egypt international also conveyed his gratitude to  beIN SPORTS, where he had been working as a television analyst before accepting Al Ahly’s offer to return to the club.

Gomaa thanked the Al Ahly hierarchy for their confidence in him and stressed that returning to serve the club was a responsibility he could not refuse.

“All thanks and appreciation to the management of Al Ahly Club for their keenness to have me back in my home again, and answering Al Ahly’s call is a duty for everyone who belongs to it,” he stated.

The former centre-back concluded his message by pledging to work hard alongside the club’s leadership and technical staff to deliver success and bring joy back to supporters.

“God willing, we will live up to expectations and help bring back joy and smiles to the fans of our beloved club. Al Ahly is always and forever above everyone.”

Gomaa’s appointment marks a significant return for one of the most decorated figures in Al Ahly’s history, with supporters hoping his experience, leadership and deep understanding of the club’s culture can help guide the team into a new era of success.
