Ramadan Sobhi is set to appear before the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in a virtual hearing scheduled for May 19, as investigations continue into doping allegations involving the Egyptian international.
The development was confirmed by his lawyer, Hany Zahran, who stated that the global anti-doping body had accepted a request to hold the session remotely, rather than requiring physical attendance.
Speaking to Yalla Kora on Wednesday, Zahran explained that WADA had initially asked for in-person participation but later approved their petition for a video conference.
“The session is dedicated solely to listening to Ramadan’s testimony,” he said.
“Afterwards, WADA will either uphold the ruling issued by the Egyptian Anti-Doping Organization or choose to issue a new decision.”
The Egyptian Anti-Doping Organization had previously lifted a provisional suspension placed on Sobhi after hearing his side of the story.
The investigation revolves around accusations of using banned substances and alleged tampering with a test sample.
Despite the serious nature of the claims, Zahran clarified that his client is currently free to play and remains eligible for selection in both domestic and continental competitions.
“There is no ruling in place right now that prevents him from participating in football activities,” Zahran added.
Sobhi, who currently plays for Egyptian Premier League side Pyramids FC, continues to train and prepare with his club as they gear up for a crucial continental fixture.
Pyramids are scheduled to host South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in the second leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final at the Air Defense Stadium.
