Vladimir Petkovic unveils unexpected picks for Algeria’s AFCON squad

Vladimir Petkovic’s 28-man Algeria squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations contains few major shocks, but the inclusion of four players from the recent Arab Cup campaign stands out.

The most unexpected comeback is that of goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea, who had not been called up since June after conceding four goals against Sweden, especially given Petkovic had previously stated he did not want players competing in the third tier, where Mandrea’s club Caen currently plays.

Mandrea’s recall is linked to a more serious-than-expected injury to Alexis Guendouz of MC Alger, who went off in a league match last week, convincing the staff to turn back to Mandrea rather than a virtually uncapped keeper. In defence, there is the anticipated return of Mohamed Amine Tougai, as hinted by Madjid Bougherra, and the less expected presence of Youcef Atal, both having used the Arab Cup to regain rhythm and minutes.

In midfield, the main talking points are the omissions of Nabil Bentaleb and Himad Abdelli, decisions explained by technical choices and strong competition, while the absence of Yacine Titraoui had been widely forecast.

In attack, Petkovic has turned to youngsters Adel Boulbina and Redouane Berkane (both born in 2003) to bolster the left wing and centre-forward positions, with Boulbina covering for injured Youcef Belaïli and Berkane taking the place of Amin Chiakha.
