Vladimir Petkovic secures contract extension after guiding Algeria to 2026 World Cup

Vladimir Petkovic will remain in charge of Algeria through the 2026 World Cup after meeting the key objective in his contract — leading the national team to qualification for football’s biggest stage.

Appointed as Algeria’s head coach on 4 March 2024, the Bosnian-Swiss manager initially signed a deal running only until the end of the World Cup qualifiers.

However, the agreement included an automatic extension clause that would take effect if he successfully guided the Fennecs to the tournament.

That condition has now been triggered following Algeria’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Somalia, which confirmed their place at the 2026 finals.

The renewal ensures Petkovic will remain at the helm under the same terms, including his reported monthly salary of €135,000.

He will also receive a substantial qualification bonus, estimated between €400,000 and €500,000, as recognition for achieving the federation’s primary goal.

This continuity represents a deliberate strategy by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), which values stability as the team begins preparations for the next phase of international competition.

With qualification secured, attention now shifts to building a competitive squad capable of progressing beyond the group stage in 2026 — something Algeria last achieved eleven years ago at the World Cup in Brazil.

The federation has also placed emphasis on continental ambitions.

Petkovic successfully guided Algeria to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and the FAF has set clear expectations for the team to at least reach the quarter-finals.

The target reflects a desire to restore Algeria’s standing in African football after disappointing early exits in both the 2021 and 2023 tournaments.

Under Petkovic’s guidance, the national side has shown renewed tactical discipline and attacking cohesion, with recent results restoring confidence among supporters after a difficult spell under previous management.
