Algeria await clarity as uncertainty surrounds Vladimir Petkovic’s future
Uncertainty continues to surround the future of Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic, with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) yet to make any official statement following the national team’s elimination from the World Cup.
A week has passed since Algeria’s exit at the hands of Switzerland, but the federation has remained silent, allowing speculation over Petkovic’s position to grow.
Despite expectations that an official announcement would be issued through the federation’s usual communication channels, no confirmation has been provided regarding the coach or the direction the national team will take.
The lack of information has extended beyond the coaching situation. There has also been no official update concerning injured forward Nadhir Benbouali, while the federation’s only notable communication relating to the senior men’s team has been a message thanking Riyad Mahrez after the veteran announced his retirement from international football.
Reports have also circulated suggesting that FAF president Walid Sadi travelled to Switzerland to hold discussions with Petkovic regarding the possible termination of his contract.
However, those claims remain unconfirmed, with no official statement from either the federation or the coach.
Attention has now shifted to the FAF’s expected federal office meeting, which is reportedly scheduled to take place this weekend in Sidi Moussa.
The gathering is expected to focus on Algeria’s disappointing World Cup campaign and could provide the opportunity for key decisions regarding the future of the national team.
Despite the growing public interest surrounding Petkovic’s position, the federation has continued to communicate on other football matters.
Recent updates have focused on the Algeria women’s national team as they prepare for the AFCON, as well as the country’s Under-17 beach soccer team.
The silence has fuelled further uncertainty, with supporters continuing to wait for clarity from the federation. Similar situations have unfolded in recent weeks, including speculation surrounding Anthar Yahia.
Reports regarding his possible appointment generated widespread discussion before fading without any official confirmation, while conflicting information later emerged.
For now, the future of Vladimir Petkovic remains unresolved, with all attention turning to the anticipated federal office meeting as Algerian football awaits an official response from the FAF.
