Virgil van Dijk backs Liverpool loan for Ifeanyi Ndukwe

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk believes promising centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe has a bright future at Anfield, but says the teenager must leave on loan to gain regular first-team experience.

Ndukwe impressed during pre-season, yet administrative restrictions mean he cannot remain with Liverpool’s senior squad for now.

“Big talent, big guy,” Van Dijk said, praising the defender’s attitude and willingness to learn. The experienced centre-back revealed that he had spoken with Ndukwe recently and encouraged him to treat a loan spell as an important part of his development.

Van Dijk admitted the situation “seems a shame” because Ndukwe is “a real prospect.” However, consistent competitive football could help the youngster mature physically, improve his decision-making and return ready to challenge for a place in Liverpool’s first team.

Ndukwe started his career at WAF Brigittenau before joining the Austria Wien academy in 2016. He captained Austria Wien at under-16 level and became a regular starter for Austria Wien II during the 2024/25 season, helping the team secure promotion to the 2. Liga.

He signed a three-year professional contract in June 2025 before agreeing to join Liverpool on January 26, 2026. The move was scheduled for summer completion after he turned 18 and became eligible.
