Vinicius Junior’s Real Madrid place under threat after latest struggle

Vinicius Junior’s position in the Real Madrid starting XI is reportedly at risk after another disappointing performance, with manager Jose Mourinho’s patience said to be running out.

The Brazil international was substituted in the 54th minute of Sunday’s 2-1 derby defeat by Atletico Madrid, shortly after Real Madrid were reduced to 10 men following Dean Huijsen’s dismissal.

Vinicius was unable to influence the match, struggled to make an impact in possession and failed to provide the attacking threat expected of him. Although his replacement, Yan Diomande, could not prevent another league defeat, the early change attracted significant attention in Spain because of the praise the new arrival received.

The decision also came after Mourinho had issued a warning about the forward in recent weeks.

“Creating goals is important, teamwork is extremely important and daily perseverance is important, and he does that to the fullest,” Mourinho said. “But there is another Vinicius. The Vinicius who had a chance against Benfica last year, scored a goal and knocked us out of the competition. He is missing that outstanding performance.”

The Brazilian has yet to rediscover that level this season, and Spanish newspaper Marca reports that his place in the starting line-up could soon be reconsidered.

Vinicius has traditionally played a central role in Real Madrid’s first-choice team and had pledged to regain his scoring touch. However, his goals tally remains at one despite having played 652 minutes in all competitions.

After the draw with Elche, he acknowledged: “I cannot miss all these chances.”

That lack of improvement has increased the likelihood of Mourinho changing his plans in the coming weeks. The situation represents a concern for a player recognised for his attacking influence and ability to decide matches.

Vinicius has also faced repeated jeers from supporters at Santiago Bernabeu, leaving him in a difficult position. He now has to produce on the pitch if he is to convince Mourinho to maintain his faith in him.

It remains unclear whether the reported threat to his starting place will become reality, but the message appears increasingly clear: his position in the first XI is no longer guaranteed.

Vinicius has been called up by Carlo Ancelotti to play three friendlies for Brazil during the international break, including two matches against Australia before a meeting with India.

The 25-year-old’s contract with Real Madrid runs until June 2032, and he will be seeking to use the period away with Brazil to regain his form and underline his importance to the club.

His attempt to re-establish himself at Real Madrid will begin on 10 October, when the team host Villarreal.
