Vinicius Junior faces scrutiny despite Mourinho backing after Real Madrid win

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior responded to growing criticism with a brief message after producing another subdued performance in Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League victory over Leipzig at Santiago Bernabeu.

The Brazil international started the third match of the league phase, but was replaced in the 70th minute by team-mate Yan Diomande. The substitute made an immediate impact, creating one goal and scoring another during his 20-minute appearance.

After the match, Vinicius posted on his official Instagram account: “I live the moment, everything passes.”

The message was interpreted by Spanish newspaper Marca as a mixture of resignation and belief, reflecting the difficult period being experienced by the Real Madrid forward.

Vinicius has faced strong criticism from supporters since the beginning of the current season, with his form attracting increasing scrutiny. Questions have also been raised about his position in the starting line-up following his four-match suspension by La Liga.

However, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho rejected the criticism and offered a firm defence of the Brazilian after the win.

“Vini played a great match and showed excellent tactical performance, which benefited both his coach and the team,” Mourinho said.

The Portuguese manager also stressed that Vinicius’ contribution could not be judged only by goals. He highlighted the forward’s work in helping Real Madrid build attacks and control space on the pitch.

“He managed to build attacks from the left wing and controlled the spaces brilliantly,” Mourinho added. “He came close to scoring a wonderful goal, but the goalkeeper saved his powerful shot.”

Vinicius’ latest display therefore produced contrasting reactions. While his failure to score or complete the match offered further evidence to those questioning his current form, Mourinho pointed to the wider tactical value of his performance against Leipzig.

The forward’s Instagram comment came as attention continued to focus on his response to the pressure surrounding him. Marca’s reading of the message captured the uncertainty around his current situation, while also suggesting that Vinicius remains confident the difficult period will pass.

Real Madrid’s convincing result provided a positive backdrop, but the debate over Vinicius’ form and his place in Mourinho’s preferred side remains unresolved. The manager’s comments indicated that the Brazilian’s role is being assessed through more than his goal tally, including his movement, work from the left and ability to contribute to the team’s attacking structure.
