Vinicius Junior faces fight to regain Real Madrid starting place under Mourinho

Vinicius Junior can no longer assume a starting place at Real Madrid, with Jose Mourinho signalling that the Brazil forward’s position is under review after a decline in form and the emergence of a strong rival on the left wing.

Vinicius needs regular football to recover his best level, but he could remain on the bench even after completing his suspension, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

The player will serve the final match of his ban against Valencia on Saturday, following an incident involving hair-pulling and Saliba. Mourinho made clear at his pre-match news conference that he would not rush to restore Vinicius to the starting XI simply because of the forward’s status.

Diomande has strengthened his claims with a series of impressive performances on the left. His ability to pose a genuine attacking threat has shown that the number seven shirt is no longer protected from a place among the substitutes.

Vinicius being named on the bench has become a recurring sight, reflecting his reduced importance in Mourinho’s current plans. Further changes could follow after the international break.

The Portuguese coach said several weeks ago that Vinicius’ place in the starting line-up would depend on his performances rather than his reputation or name. He repeated that message ahead of the trip to Valencia.

“When Vinicius returns to his normal level and becomes available, I will deal with the situation,” Mourinho said.

Team interests come first

The manager is facing a difficult decision over how best to handle Vinicius. The Brazil international needs game time to rediscover his usual form, while Real Madrid have appeared to perform better during his absence.

Mourinho said the club’s needs would take priority over any individual consideration.

“For me, the most important thing is the team. I have never wanted, of my own accord, to harm the team for the benefit of a player,” he said.

“It is true that Vinicius played in the last two Champions League matches, but when he returns to his normal level and is ready, I will deal with the situation.”

Vinicius continues to have strong support within Real Madrid, including from his manager. However, Diomande’s form has established a clear example of the value Mourinho places on merit, while the Brazilian’s reduced impact has made his continued role as a starter less certain than at any previous point.

Real Madrid face Valencia in La Liga on Saturday, 07 November 2026, with Vinicius completing his suspension in the match.
