Vinicius Jr defends celebrations after Real Madrid win over Manchester City
Vinicius Jr has played down suggestions that his celebrations against Manchester City were meant as an insult, insisting he was simply giving some joy back to Real Madrid fans after a huge Champions League win.
The Brazilian forward scored both goals in Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory at the Etihad in the second leg of their 2025/26 Champions League tie, a result that sent Los Blancos into the quarterfinals. His animated celebrations in front of Man City supporters sparked debate online, with some fans accusing him of going too far.
Asked after the game whether he was disrespecting the home crowd, Vinicius was clear in his response: “I wasn’t disrespecting Manchester City fans.
“Last year they had fun; this time I was just replying to that… it’s what makes football beautiful and fun.”
Having missed a crucial penalty against City at the Bernabeu earlier in the tie, Vinicius responded in the best possible way, delivering two composed finishes on a high-pressure night in Manchester and reminding everyone why he is one of the Champions League’s most decisive attacking talents.
Vinicius Jr has played 12 games, scored five goals, and assisted four in the Champions League this season.
