Vincenzo Alberto Annese appointed Equatorial Guinea head coach

Italian coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese has been appointed as the new head coach of the Equatorial Guinea national team, succeeding Juan Micha Obiang and ushering in a new era for the Nzalang Nacional.

Annese has finalised an agreement with the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) and has already begun preparations for his first international assignment. The UEFA Pro-licensed coach is currently working on his squad selection ahead of the next international window.

His appointment comes shortly after FEGUIFUT officially ended Micha’s tenure following a five-year spell in charge. The federation decided against renewing Micha’s contract after conducting what it described as a technical, institutional and sporting evaluation of his time with the national team.

Micha left as one of Equatorial Guinea’s most successful coaches, having guided the side to three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 2021, 2023 and 2025.

Annese returns to African football

Annese’s appointment represents a return to African football for the Italian, whose continental coaching career began in Ghana in 2017.

The 51-year-old took charge of Ghana Premier League side Bechem United during the 2017 season, although his stay with the Hunters was brief. He managed fewer than 20 matches before ending his spell at the club.

Since then, Annese has built an extensive international coaching profile, working across several countries and continents. He has managed the national teams of Belize, Nepal and Afghanistan, giving him experience of working in different football environments and with players from diverse backgrounds.

His résumé also includes a spell in the Indian Super League with NorthEast United, while he served as technical director of the Burkina Faso Football Federation in late 2025.

That varied experience is expected to be central to his mandate in Equatorial Guinea, where the federation is looking for greater stability and a clear technical direction.

New challenge after turbulent period

Annese inherits a national team that has experienced considerable turbulence in recent months.

Equatorial Guinea’s previous World Cup qualifying campaign was disrupted by an internal dispute after players failed to travel for a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Malawi in October 2025.

FEGUIFUT subsequently suspended Micha, but the coach was later reinstated after senior players opposed the decision and threatened to boycott the 2025 AFCON.

With that period now behind them, the federation has turned to Annese to rebuild the team and establish a more disciplined and competitive structure.

AFCON qualifiers the first major test

The Italian’s immediate focus will be on preparing Equatorial Guinea for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Nzalang Nacional have been drawn in Group E alongside DR Congo, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe, with their campaign scheduled to begin away against DR Congo before a meeting with Sierra Leone.

Annese is expected to use the upcoming international window to assess his options and begin shaping the squad he believes can compete for qualification.

His appointment therefore marks more than a change in the dugout, with FEGUIFUT hoping his international experience and tactical versatility can restore stability and provide a fresh direction for the national team.
