Vincent Aboubakar’s Move to Lyon Unlikely as Club Eyes Other Striker Options
Olympique Lyonnais’ pursuit of a new striker to replace Bafetimbi Gomis has hit a stumbling block, with Vincent Aboubakar’s potential transfer appearing increasingly unlikely this summer.
The Cameroon international, who impressed with Lorient last season—scoring 16 goals and providing six assists—and remained active with the Indomitable Lions during the World Cup, had been closely linked with a move to Lyon. However, financial constraints at the Rhône club now cast doubt on the deal.
According to reports from Olympique et Lyonnais, the 22-year-old forward’s price tag of around €10 million is proving too steep for Lyon, with club officials seemingly reluctant to meet FC Lorient president Loïc Féry’s valuation. Féry has publicly stated that he will not entertain offers below that figure, effectively pricing Aboubakar out of the Gones’ budget.
While Lyon’s management had conducted scouting and follow-up checks on Aboubakar—who was also monitored toward the end of last season—the club may now shift its focus elsewhere in the transfer market. Sources close to the player suggest that Premier League clubs are showing serious interest, with a move to England increasingly likely.
This development leaves Olympique Lyonnais with a pressing need to identify alternative attacking options before the close of the transfer window. Hubert Fournier’s squad will have to explore other avenues if they want to fill the void left by the departure of Gomis, who recently completed a transfer to Swansea City.
Aboubakar’s strong performances in Ligue 1 and on the international stage have undoubtedly caught the eye of several clubs, but Lorient’s firm stance on the striker’s valuation may ultimately determine the next step in his career.
As the transfer window progresses, Lyon will need to act decisively to bolster their frontline and maintain their competitive edge in Ligue 1 and European competitions.
