Villarreal stun Valencia despite Pape Gueye red card
Villarreal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Valencia despite being reduced to 10 men after Senegalese midfielder Pape Gueye was sent off in the closing stages of their LaLiga encounter.
The Yellow Submarine battled back from a goal down before Georges Mikautadze scored a late winner to seal their third league victory of the season. The result came after a difficult contest in which Villarreal had to overcome both Valencia’s first-half advantage and the disadvantage of playing with one fewer player.
Valencia took the lead in the 38th minute when Pepelu converted a penalty, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage at half-time. They appeared to be in a strong position after a disciplined first-half performance, but their grip on the match weakened after the break.
Villarreal increased their attacking pressure and found an equaliser in the 70th minute, bringing the visitors back into the contest and setting up a tense finish.
Villarreal fight back after Valencia take the lead
Valencia had made the most of their opportunity from the penalty spot in the first half, with Pepelu putting his side ahead shortly before the interval.
However, Villarreal responded after the restart, gradually gaining momentum as they searched for a way back into the game. Their efforts paid off when they levelled the score in the 70th minute, leaving both teams competing for a decisive goal.
The equaliser appeared to give Villarreal renewed confidence, but the match took another turn when Gueye was dismissed for elbowing an opponent.
The Senegalese midfielder’s red card left Villarreal with 10 players for the final stages, forcing the visitors to continue their push for victory while dealing with the numerical disadvantage.
Despite the setback, Villarreal refused to settle for a draw. They continued to look for an opportunity to take the lead, while Valencia were unable to make their extra player count.
Mikautadze delivers decisive blow
Just when the contest appeared to be heading towards a difficult conclusion for Villarreal, Mikautadze struck late to complete the comeback and secure all three points.
The goal capped a determined performance from the visitors, who had recovered from conceding first and then overcome Gueye’s dismissal to claim victory.
For Villarreal, the result marked their third league win of the campaign and provided a significant reward for their persistence in a match that had presented several challenges.
Valencia, meanwhile, were left to reflect on a missed opportunity after taking the lead before half-time. Their failure to protect the advantage allowed Villarreal to return to the game, while the late winner denied them the chance to take points from the encounter.
Villarreal’s ability to find a winning goal despite playing with 10 men proved decisive in a closely contested meeting between the two Spanish sides.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory for the Yellow Submarine, with Mikautadze’s late intervention ensuring that Gueye’s red card did not prevent his team from leaving with all three points.
