Villarreal count on Morocco winger Ilias Akhomach despite growing transfer interest

Villarreal are refusing to entertain offers for Morocco international Ilias Akhomach despite growing interest from European clubs, according to reports in Spain.

Spanish newspaper AS, cited by Moroccan outlet Elbotola, reports that Espanyol and French club Olympique de Marseille are preparing offers for the 20-year-old winger.

However, Villarreal currently have no intention of allowing Akhomach to leave, with the Spanish club viewing him as an important part of their plans for the upcoming season.

Villarreal see key role for Akhomach

Villarreal’s coaching staff are planning to give Akhomach a prominent role in their attacking setup, particularly on the right wing.

The club’s tactical plans could provide the Morocco international with a regular starting opportunity, with recent signing Nicolas Pepe expected to be used in other positions.

That has strengthened Villarreal’s desire to keep Akhomach, although Spanish reports suggest the player’s own preference could ultimately influence his future.

Akhomach’s reputation grew significantly after his performances for Morocco at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Morocco produced one of the standout results of the tournament by beating Egypt 6-0 in the bronze-medal match on 8 August, with Akhomach among the players who impressed during the campaign.

His performances in France further increased his profile and attracted greater attention from clubs across Europe.

From Barcelona to Villarreal

Villarreal signed Akhomach on a free transfer from Barcelona in July 2023, and he quickly established himself in the club’s first-team setup.

During his debut season, the winger made 39 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing five assists.

His continued development has made him an increasingly valuable player for Villarreal, while also strengthening his position within Morocco’s emerging generation of international players.
