Vieira questions Arsenal mentality after damaging Man City defeat
Patrick Vieira has cast doubt over Arsenal’s title credentials, admitting he would ‘question the mental strength’ of his former side following their 2-1 loss to Manchester City.
The defeat at the Etihad Stadium could prove pivotal in the Premier League title race, with Mikel Arteta’s men now facing the real prospect of surrendering top spot for the first time in months.
City, who have been relentless in the closing stages of recent campaigns, have the opportunity to overtake Arsenal when they face Burnley.
The Senegal-born former France international, speaking in his role as a pundit after the match, acknowledged the overall quality of Arsenal’s display but highlighted a decisive gap between contenders and champions.
“I think Arsenal had a good performance but the difference between good teams and great teams, you can see that on the field. Those top players make the difference,” he said.
While the performance itself offered encouragement, the result has intensified scrutiny on Arsenal’s ability to cope with the psychological demands of a title run-in. Vieira suggested that beyond tactics and technical execution, mentality could define the outcome of the race.
“Arsenal will feel more of the pressure now. I would question the mental strength of the team even more now,” he added.
