Kaizer Chiefs produced a stunning comeback to knock out defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 and reach the final of the 2025 Nedbank Cup in South Africa.
The semi-final victory, secured at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, sets up a mouth-watering Soweto derby final against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates – the first meeting between the two giants in a domestic cup final since 2006.
Sundowns, the reigning Premier Soccer League champions and favourites to progress, took a first-half lead through Teboho Mokoena in injury time. The goal appeared to cement their dominance and many expected the Brazilians to cruise into the final.
But Chiefs, who came into the match as clear underdogs, responded with grit and determination in the second half. Young forward Wandile Duba pounced on a defensive error to draw his side level, before substitute Ashley Du Preez struck the winner late on to complete the dramatic turnaround.
The win ended Sundowns’ hopes of retaining the Nedbank Cup and halted their quest for another domestic treble, while also extending Chiefs’ dream of lifting silverware for the first time in over a decade. The last time the Amakhosi won the Nedbank Cup was in 2013.
Earlier in the day, Orlando Pirates booked their place in the final with a narrow 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium. Kabelo Dlamini’s first-half strike was enough to see the Buccaneers into their third consecutive Nedbank Cup final, as they chase a historic third straight triumph – a feat only previously achieved by the Pirates teams of the 1970s.
The 2025 final, set for Saturday, 10 May at Moses Mabhida Stadium, will revive one of South African football’s most iconic rivalries, with Chiefs and Pirates contesting their first national cup final since the 2006 Absa Cup.
Chiefs emerged victorious on penalties that day after a goalless draw.
This year’s final promises not only to be a showcase of South African football heritage, but also a battle between two of the country’s most successful clubs – Chiefs with 13 national cup wins, and Pirates with 10.
