The case of Eric Parfait Djomeni has sent shockwaves through Cameroonian football, as Victoria United president Valentine Nkwain stands accused of kidnapping and torturing his own goalkeeper. Legal proceedings are now underway, raising questions about the potential consequences he may face if found guilty.
On Tuesday, the law firm Conseils Djemeni & Partners confirmed that a formal complaint had been filed on behalf of Djomeni, citing charges of illegal arrest, sequestration, and torture against Nkwain.
Severe Legal Ramifications
Under Cameroonian law, torture is classified as any act inflicting physical, mental, or moral suffering, particularly when used to extract confessions, impose punishment, or instill fear.
Should the investigation confirm that Djomeni was subjected to physical or psychological abuse under duress, Nkwain could face a prison sentence ranging from two to ten years.
The severity of the penalty will depend on the extent of Djomeni’s injuries:
- If the victim was unable to work for more than 30 days due to the alleged torture, Nkwain could receive a prison term of five to ten years along with a fine of up to 1 million CFA francs (€1,524).
- If Djomeni endured physical or psychological pain without prolonged incapacitation, Nkwain could face a lesser sentence of two to five years in prison and a fine ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 CFA francs (€76 to €305).
Kidnapping Charges Could Worsen the Case
Beyond the torture allegations, Nkwain could also be prosecuted for illegal detention. Cameroonian law strictly prohibits unlawful deprivation of liberty, and if Djomeni’s claim that he was forcibly held against his will is substantiated, Nkwain’s legal troubles could deepen further.
With Cameroonian football already embroiled in multiple controversies, this case could prove pivotal in shaping how justice is served in the sport. Whether authorities pursue the matter to its full extent remains to be seen.
