While he is now training with the first team, Lekhal emphasized the importance of not rushing his comeback. “Before this match with the reserve team, I felt a little apprehensive at first, but it quickly disappeared. Plus, symbolically, I scored, from the penalty spot. The staff and I decided that playing matches would allow me to take a step forward, as I resumed training with the first team a month ago. I’d like to play one or two full matches before making a bid for a starting spot. There’s no question of rushing things… When I return to league play, I want to be at 100% of my capacity, in top form,” he added.
Lekhal’s absence was also felt at the international level, as he missed Algeria’s triumphant Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Egypt in 2019. Despite being sidelined, he remained fully supportive of the team and expressed pride in their achievement. “Of course there was a little pang of disappointment because we thought we could have been there. But I was their biggest supporter. I was very happy for them. It’s a very good group with a great coach,” he explained.
