Victor Boniface nears return to boost Werder Bremen’s attacking options

Victor Boniface is edging closer to a comeback for Werder Bremen and could soon be an option in the matchday squad again.

The 25-year-old forward has recently been sidelined not only by his ongoing fitness issues but also by an infection, which set him back in his build-up. Now there are growing signs that he may return to the bench for the upcoming Bundesliga trip to VfB Stuttgart on Sunday afternoon.

Head coach Daniel Thioune sounded encouraged when he spoke about Boniface’s condition before the game. “Yesterday on the pitch I had a good impression of him, that he had overcome the infection”, explained the Werder coach at the press conference. That impression suggests Boniface has taken an important step forward, although a final decision on his inclusion will only be made at short notice.

Thioune has already ruled out a starting role for the striker. He stressed that Boniface may feature, but only from the bench, making a late substitute appearance the most realistic scenario if he comes through the last sessions without issues. The situation in attack could work in his favour, with Justin Njinmah currently struggling in training and the absence of Marco Grüll weighing heavily on the squad. Thioune summed it up by saying they will use the final trainings to assess what the team needs and what Boniface still requires.

Looking ahead to the run-in, an additional option like Boniface could be valuable for Werder in the final games of the season. He is expected to be used primarily as an impact player from the bench, offering fresh energy and physical presence in the closing stages.
