Victor Boniface’s preseason with Bayer Leverkusen hasn’t gone as expected, but the club insists there’s no cause for alarm.
The Nigerian forward has seen limited action in recent friendlies, not due to form but caution.
After an intense individual training camp in Spain before joining the team, Boniface arrived eager and in shape. Yet those extra sessions may have pushed him too hard, leading to what the club describes as a “stress reaction.” As a result, Leverkusen is managing his workload carefully.
In games against Bochum and Sittard, Boniface entered the pitch only in the final minutes, both times after 18-year-old striker Christian Kofane. It’s a move the club says is purely protective rather than tactical.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed that Boniface’s status is being closely monitored, with the player alternating between training and rest. The goal is to rebuild his strength without risking further setbacks.
Coach Erik ten Hag is confident in the striker’s return and believes Boniface can eventually form a dynamic pairing with Patrik Schick.
