Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has revealed that he has no desire to play in the English Premier League, despite interest from top clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea. The Bayer Leverkusen forward, who has gained attention as one of Europe’s rising stars, expressed a clear preference for German and Spanish football instead.
Boniface, who enjoyed a sensational 2023/24 season with Leverkusen, scoring 21 goals in 34 appearances and helping his team secure both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal, shared his thoughts in an interview with Spoty TV.
The 22-year-old disclosed that his disinterest in the Premier League is nothing new and dates back to his early days, long before he achieved success in European football.
“I’ve been saying this even before I had an international passport, even before I dreamt of coming to Europe – I don’t really like the Premier League,” Boniface said during the interview.
“I admit I did an interview before, and I’m not saying this just because I’m on this level.”
These remarks will likely be a disappointment to Premier League clubs hoping to lure Boniface to England.
Arsenal and Chelsea, two of the league’s top teams, have reportedly shown interest in the Nigerian international, hoping to bolster their attacking options.
However, Boniface remains firm in his stance, highlighting his passion for playing in other European leagues.
The former Union SG star, who has rapidly risen through the ranks since his arrival in Europe, added that if given the choice, he would prefer to continue playing in either Germany or Spain.
“I prefer Spanish football or German football.
I’m not saying that if a good team comes for me, I will not go.
But if you ask me to pick two countries, I really want to play in Germany and Spain, to live and play in those countries,” he explained.
Boniface’s comments underline his commitment to his current path in the Bundesliga, while also signalling an interest in Spain’s La Liga should he decide to move in the future.
While his talents have drawn attention from many corners of Europe, it seems clear that his ambitions lie outside of the Premier League, despite its global reputation and financial appeal.
As the transfer window continues to evolve and clubs weigh their options, Boniface’s preference for La Liga and Bundesliga clubs will certainly shape the potential suitors in his next career move.
For now, the Nigerian forward remains focused on his journey with Bayer Leverkusen, where he continues to make his mark as one of the top strikers in European football.
