Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed the permanent signing of France-born Congolese defender Sael Kumbedi following a successful loan spell from Olympique Lyon.
The right-back joined the German side in the summer of 2025 on a season-long loan deal that included an option to buy. Wolfsburg have now exercised that clause, securing the services of the 20-year-old on a long-term basis.
In an official statement, the club confirmed that the purchase option has been activated, with Kumbedi signing a contract that will keep him at the Volkswagen Arena until June 30, 2029.
“Initially on loan, VfL Wolfsburg secured the services of Sael Kumbedi from Olympique Lyon in the summer . Now all parties have planning certainty: because the previously agreed purchase option has been exercised, the 20-year-old right-back is now a permanent member of the VfL Wolfsburg squad,” the German club announced on Monday.
The French Under-21 international has impressed since his arrival, quickly establishing himself as a key figure in the squad.
Since making his debut for the Lower Saxony club on October 18, 2025, Kumbedi has become a regular starter and delivered consistent performances. He has featured in 10 competitive matches for Wolfsburg so far, contributing four assists from right-back.
Wolfsburg’s decision to make the move permanent reflects the club’s confidence in Kumbedi’s development and long-term potential as they continue to strengthen their squad for the future.
