Veteran gaffer Ernst Middendorp departs Durban City after short-term technical director role

Durban City FC have officially announced the departure of German football tactician Ernst Middendorp from his role as Technical Director, bringing to an end speculation that he might take up a coaching position at the club.

Middendorp, who previously managed Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town Spurs rejoined Durban City on 15 December 2025 on a short-term contract with a clear mandate: to stabilise and strengthen the club’s technical structures during a transitional period.

During his tenure, the club saw the departure of head coaches Gavin Hunt and Sinethemba Badela, with reports indicating that differences in opinion with Middendorp contributed to Hunt’s exit. Despite these changes, Durban City confirmed that Middendorp had fulfilled the objectives set out in his brief engagement.

“Durban City FC confirms that Technical Director Ernst Middendorp has completed his short-term contract with the club, having fulfilled the specific mandate for which he was engaged. His brief focused on stabilising and strengthening the club’s technical structures during a period of transition, and that mandate has now been brought to its planned conclusion. The club thanks Ernst Middendorp for his professionalism and commitment during his time with us and wishes him success in his future endeavours.” A statement reads.

Middendorp’s departure closes a chapter at Durban City, but his contributions during a turbulent period — particularly in supporting the club’s technical operations — are expected to have a lasting impact as the team moves forward in the Betway Premiership.
