Former Ghanaian midfielder Alfred Duncan has revealed that a lack of respect influenced his decision to retire early from international football.

Duncan, who made his debut for the Black Stars in a 2016 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Mozambique, stepped away from national team duties in 2019.

Speaking to Sporty FM about his decision, the ex-Inter Milan midfielder explained, “With the national team, it was complicated because it was my decision to quit because I wasn’t getting the respect I think I deserved.

“For a player like me, when I got to the peak of my career, I thought I deserved more respect, which I wasn’t getting enough. I think it was best to part ways in order for the young ones or the ones they thought they were right for the team to get the chance to play.”

Duncan earned nine caps for Ghana before retiring.

The defensive midfielder has spent most of his career in Italy, featuring for clubs like Inter Milan, Sassuolo, Fiorentina, and, most recently, Venezia.
