VAR denies Juventus late winner as Mousa Al-Tamari helps Rennes earn Europa League draw
Juventus were denied a late winner by VAR as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Rennes in the Europa League on Thursday, 22 October 2026.
The Italian side appeared to have completed a comeback at the Allianz Stadium when Colombian defender Jhon Lucumi found the net in the 88th minute. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving Juventus frustrated after a strong finish.
The result means Juventus remain fourth in the league-phase standings with seven points from two wins and a draw. Rennes are 13th on five points, having recorded one victory and two draws.
Juventus took the lead after only five minutes when Zeki Celik scored to give the home side an early advantage.
Rennes responded 10 minutes later, with Jordan forward Mousa Al-Tamari equalising in the 15th minute. The goal was Al-Tamari’s first contribution of the evening as the French side recovered quickly from their poor start.
Rennes then completed the turnaround shortly before half-time. Boulaye Dia converted a penalty in the 40th minute, putting Juventus under pressure to find a response after the interval.
The hosts levelled again in the 67th minute when German striker Nick Woltemade scored from the penalty spot.
Juventus pushed forward in the closing stages in search of a winning goal and thought they had found it through Lucumi. The offside decision, confirmed by video technology, ensured the points were shared and brought another disappointing result for the hosts.
Juventus had also suffered a heavy defeat in their previous match, losing 3-0 at home to Lazio in Serie A. The latest draw leaves them without a victory in their past two matches at the Allianz Stadium and further complicates their position in domestic competition.
