Ruud Van Nistelrooy praises Moroccan international Ismaël Saibari’s rise after early doubts
Former PSV coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has praised the development of Ismaël Saibari, describing the midfielder as a player now ready to reach the highest level of international football.
Van Nistelrooy, who worked closely with Saibari during his time at PSV Eindhoven, said the Moroccan international had shown both character and talent since his early days in the club’s system.
The former Manchester United striker oversaw Saibari’s progression from the reserve side Jong PSV to the first team.
Reflecting on the midfielder’s early development in the documentary series Hier in het Zuiden, Van Nistelrooy recalled their first conversation when he began coaching the youth side.
“He combines character and talent, it’s all there,” he said.
The Dutch coach also revealed that Saibari initially doubted his chances of making the breakthrough at the club.
“He knows what he needs to do to perform well every week. When I became Jong’s (PSV youth) coach, I remember our first conversation,” Van Nistelrooij explained.
“He confided in me that he doubted Jong’s ability to break into the first team. That was our first discussion. And yet, that’s what laid the foundation for his development. He achieved his progress entirely on his own. It’s remarkable.”
A key player for PSV
Saibari’s role within the PSV squad has grown significantly, particularly following the departure of several players in recent seasons.
According to Van Nistelrooy, the attacking midfielder has become one of the team’s most influential performers.
The former striker believes Saibari’s determination and competitive mentality have been central to his progress.
Van Nistelrooy described him as a player “hungry for victories”, suggesting that his impact is now clearly visible in PSV’s performances.
“Following the departures of several players, he is now undoubtedly the most dominant player on the team. Including in the Champions League. His performance, the number and quality of his goals… He is a mature player, ready for the highest international level. A real treat to watch.”
Continued growth
Saibari’s journey from doubt to confidence has become an example of steady development within PSV’s structure.
Once unsure of his place in the first team, the Moroccan international has established himself as a key figure through consistent performances.
For Van Nistelrooy, the midfielder’s progress is the result of dedication and self-belief, qualities that have helped him emerge as one of the club’s standout players.
